Dear Parents/Guardians

A warm welcome to a new school year with your child now in Primary 2. The children have come together from two primary one classes and are getting to know one another.
The Primary 2 curriculum
This year we will be fully implementing the new Curriculum for Excellence. This brings more opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, where several subjects are brought together through chosen topics. There will also be a focus on Health and Wellbeing which includes mental, emotional, social and physical education.
Language
The children will continue with the Cambridge reading scheme, building on previous vocabulary. An individual list of first common words will shortly be sent home with each child, with known words highlighted. It would be of great help if you could practise those not familiar to your child at home. Phonics this term will involve revision and consolidation of sounds sh, ch, th, wh and ph. A sounds practice sheet will also be sent home with your child. The children will continue to develop writing skills through personal, imaginative and functional writing. Handwriting this term will be revision and practice of letter formation, including capital letters. There will be many opportunities provided to continue developing listening and talking skills, including two weekly visits to the school’s Open Area.
Maths
We will be using a combination of active maths activities and the Heinemann 2 maths programme. Topics for this term will include addition and subtraction within 10, and further development of basic concepts in using money, time and shape.
Interdisciplinary Topics
This term’s main topic is “Life in the Past”. The children will be comparing aspects of everyday life today with that of their grandparents and great-grandparents. This topic will integrate language work, drama, social studies and ICT. We will also be studying Eid.
Expressive Arts
Our programmes in Art, Drama and Music contain a wide variety of activities and experiences. During certain topics these subjects will be an integral part of topic work, and at other times may be an independent unit study.
P.E.
Primary 2b’s days for gym are Monday and Wednesday. Some children have already brought a gym bag with soft shoes and shorts to keep in school. It would be easier if your child could wear a poloshirt on these days to save time changing shirts and ties. Children should not wear jewellery, particularly pierced earrings, on gym days.
Homework
Pupils will be given a new reading book on a Monday which will be collected in on a Friday. Please read with your child as many nights as possible during the week, and sign the reading record. Spelling homework will be given on a Monday also, to be brought back on Thursday for a spelling test. Maths homework will be given on a Tuesday, to be returned on Fridays.

Finally, although I will meet you at parents’ evenings this year, please feel free to contact me at any time if you have a particular concern regarding your child. I hope to see you at our ‘Meet the Teacher’ session on Friday 3rd September.

Yours sincerely
