Welcome to session 2010/2011
Term 1 Information

Dear Parent/Carer

Welcome back to a new term and I am delighted to be teaching your child this session. A new stage brings new experiences, challenges, teaching and resources and I assure you that your child will be guided throughout the session with as much care and attention as possible. At Shawlands we strive to ensure that every child is well motivated to reach his/her full potential. Our teaching methods correspond with The Curriculum for Excellence and we aim to ensure our children become confident individuals, effective contributors, responsible citizens and successful learners.

In Primary 6 your children will be given opportunities and duties around the school such as acting as door holders at intervals, lunchtime and home time, hopefully fostering a sense of responsibility and job commitment.
P6a will be door holders for the first half of the year and P6b for the second half, starting in January 2011.  Children will also have the opportunity to become peer mediators. Information about Peer Mediation will follow.

In the course of the year you will be notified of any new aspects of the curriculum to be studied. I will, of course, be willing and available to help by suggesting ways in which you may be able to support your child’s education.

We already have an outing organised for the near future – Food and Farming Day and Country to City Day, with more to follow. You will receive information and EV5 permission letters in due course and this will apply to all future trips.

If at any time you can help with resources or trips, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Meanwhile here is some useful information:

The Maths scheme in use is Heinemann and children will be given opportunities to practise Active Learning where they have experience of hands on, contextualised activities as well as opportunities for written work.

Interdisciplinary Learning-The topic for this term is ‘Victorians’. The main focus of this topic is ‘People in the Past’. The children will work in collaborative groups, where possible, which will develop a range of skills. As well as this, children will be encouraged to work with a partner and as individuals. The topic will incorporate subjects such as Writing, Art, Drama, Music, Health and Wellbeing and Talking and Listening.

Discrete Subjects- Subjects not covered in conjunction with the topic will be taught separately. These will vary from term to term.

Religious EducationThis term the focus will be on Ramadan and Eid and how it is celebrated in Pakistan and in the UK. Through this we will explore some aspects of Health and Wellbeing where children will be encouraged to respect others and their beliefs.

Personal LearningChildren will focus on their own learning looking at their learning logs and setting their own targets each term.

Health and Wellbeing
Physical Education
Primary 6a will have PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. P.6b gym days are Tuesdays and Fridays.
Soft shoes, shorts and T-shirt must be worn. No jewellery of any kind should be worn during PE lessons. Leggings may be worn for religious reasons.

Stationery  Every child should bring their own pencil, rubber, ruler, felt pens/coloured pencils to school.

Homework  Every child will be issued with a homework diary. Please encourage your child to complete his/her homework. The homework diary should be signed every night to state that you have seen the completed homework and that you are happy with the standard of presentation.
The homework diary can be used as a means of communication with class and set teachers.

Please encourage your child to develop their organisational skills by bringing the necessary stationery, homework, homework diary etc to school every day and PE kit on the relevant days of the week.

Primary 6 Homework will consist of:
Spelling which will be given out on a Tuesday and returned on a Friday.
Setting homework for Maths and Language.
Any unfinished class work which we consider your child should have been able to complete in the given class time, will also be sent home.

Recreational Reading
I am sure you will agree that the educational advantages your child will reap from reading from a variety of sources for leisure purposes are manifold and your support in this field would be much appreciated. I know many pupils are already library members and you will be fully aware that local libraries offer a wide array of suitable material for children of all ages and abilities. It is my experience that youngsters exhibit pride in their membership.
Please remind your child to complete the book chart at the back of his/her homework diary indicating books read for pleasure.

Lunches  Primary 6 pupils should have lunch at home, in the dinner school or have a packed lunch.

Absence   A letter on the child’s return to schoolmust coverany absence. A telephone call to school on the first day of illness would also be appreciated.

Meet The Teacher 2010    A warm invitation is extended to the parents of P.6a and P.6b parents/carers to attend an informal meeting on Thursday 2nd September at 2.15pm. The purpose of this is simply to introduce myself to you, explain in more detail the P.6 curriculum and answer any general questions you may wish to ask. This is not an occasion when I am able to discuss your child’s individual needs/progress. This will take place at the Parent Consultation Meetings in November or indeed at any other time requested and arranged.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or the school with any enquiries. We are always willing to help and happy to arrange a suitable time to meet if necessary.

If we have not already met I look forward to doing so in the near future.

Yours sincerely
E. Beattie
Class Teacher.
